Jefferson
A free wildlife refuge 15 minutes south of Salem, open dawn to dusk, with boardwalk trails and huge winter flocks of geese. The Ankeny Hill Nature Center adds accessible trails and a Nature Explore play area.

Independence's 20-acre riverfront park with a playground, river access, and an amphitheater hosting the River's Edge Summer Series — free movies in the park plus a concert series. About 15 minutes from Salem.
Mt. Angel
Oregon's famous Bavarian festival each September is surprisingly family-friendly: the free Kindergarten area has pony rides, a hay maze, petting zoo, and bouncy houses, plus free bandstand concerts and Glockenspiel shows downtown.
